Preparation and Research

Research is an incredibly important aspect of Model United Nations, and it's a facet we're proud to promote at our Novice Conference.  Every committee includes an extensive Topic Synopsis, which provides an overview of the topic and a case study along with questions and sources to help spark your continued research.  We can't stress enough how important it is you read the synopsis in its entirety.  We also highly encourage all delegates to submit a Position Paper for each topic. To be considered for a Research Award, papers must be submitted to your chairs no later than April 21st.  

Suggested Research Sites:

  • Official website of the UN, contains topic briefs for every major issue, and backgrounds on each committee.
  • The UN’s online library, includes copies of resolutions passed and voting records. Excellent for determining country policy and analyzing past solutions.
  • Useful for their “World Factbook” which documents statistics for every country including population size, government structure, transnational issues, etc.
  • Website of the New York Times, especially useful for their “Times Topics”, which link together all articles on a topic and include a summary of the events.
  • Web home of the US State Department, similar to Includes information about many topics and showcases US policy.

Technology Use

Delegates are more than welcome to bring laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other electronics to be used constructively during committee. We're happy to be able to provide free wireless internet access to all delegates, courtesy of our school administration.  No password is needed, simply connect to "HBUHSD Guest" and click "Accept".

Delegates who do not bring or have access to technology will not be penalized in anyway - points will not be reduced, and all Dais Chairs will keep a watchful eye to ensure delegates are not being left our of debate based on their electronics.  Unprofessional or nonconstructive use of electronic devices will not be permitted in any way, shape, or form, and HBHSMUN reserves the right to confiscate any electronic devices being repeatedly used in a distractive manner, to be returned to the delegates Faculty Advisor at their earliest convience. Diplomacy Points may also be docked for innapropriate use of technology.

Food Service

Lunch will be provided for all delegates. A light breakfast and lunch will also be provided in our Advisor’s Lounge for Faculty and Student Advisors only. Delegations with special dietary restrictions should contact our Secretaries-General immediately to ensure they can be accommodated.
